Rugby League’s most Famous Trophy in Brum
The Rugby League Challenge Cup, one of the oldest and most famous sporting trophies in world sport is currently “on tour” at a number of local hospitals.
In conjunction with the Rugby Football League and Birmingham Bulldogs Rugby League FC, the Birmingham NHS Trust has launched a Touch Rugby Competitions involving teams drawn from local rugby clubs of both codes – including Aston old Edwardians and Birmingham Barbarians – plus teams made up of teachers, school students (inc. a girls’ team from King Edwards GS, Handsworth (the Community League), and a number of sides from the NHS: nurses, doctors, surgeons etc. (The Hospital Staff League)
The first round of matches for these leagues was played on Wednesday 7th May; a second round is due soon [TBA]
The Rugby Football League is showing its support for the venture by sending its most famous trophy – the Rugby League Challenge Cup, first competed for in 1897 – on a short “tour” of the local hospitals involved in the initiative.
Tomorrow (Wednesday May 14) the Cup will be on display at the main entrance to the Birmingham Heartlands Hospital in Bordesley Green at around 4:00 pm.
The touch competition is intended to culminate in “Grand Final” in August between the winners of the two leagues [details TBA]
